Do AI crawler visits mean your page was cited?
A crawler request, an AI citation, and a visitor from an AI answer are three different events. Here is what each one can tell you.

Does a request from an AI crawler mean it used your page in an answer?
No. A request shows that a client tried to fetch a URL. It does not show what the client did with the response or whether a later answer mentioned, cited, or recommended your company. Cloudflare’s crawler view reports requests and unsuccessful requests separately; an unsuccessful request can reflect a rule or response error. Cloudflare’s AI crawler documentation
The next step depends on the question you need to answer. If you are checking access, inspect the request and response. If you are checking what buyers hear, capture the AI answer. If you are checking visits, inspect your analytics source.
| Signal | What you can conclude | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| An agent requests a page | A request reached the site or edge | Whether the content was read or used in an answer |
| The request succeeds | The page was served for that request | Whether any buyer saw the page or an AI cited it |
| An AI answer cites the page | That answer associates the page with a passage | Whether the page supports every claim in the passage |
| A person visits from an AI service | A measurable visit reached your site with recognizable source data | Which answer they saw, and whether uncaptured visits also occurred |
How do you check whether the request came from the claimed operator?
Start with the identity evidence, not just the user-agent name. A request can claim to be a known crawler in its user-agent string. Cloudflare also has a verified-bot signal for traffic it has identified through methods such as published IP lists, reverse DNS, or request signatures. A verified identity tells you more about who sent the request; it still does not establish answer use. Cloudflare’s verified-bot documentation
Check the requested path, time, response status, and whether a rule blocked or challenged it. If a page is inaccessible, fix that access problem before interpreting low citation counts. A successful fetch is an access observation, not a citation result.
What does an AI referral visit prove?
Google Analytics now has an AI Assistant channel for visits whose referrer matches a recognized assistant. It assigns the ai-assistant medium to those visits. The channel does not include Google’s AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google reports those search features within Search Console’s overall Web performance data. Referral data depends on the source information that reaches your site. A visit with no clear referral source can appear as direct traffic, so zero recorded AI referrals does not establish zero AI-driven visits. A citation that nobody clicks creates no visit at all. How do you find out what an AI answer actually said?
Run the buyer question and save the answer, date, interface, and available citations. Open the cited page and check the passage beside the answer’s claim. A link in a general source panel is weaker evidence than a citation attached to the specific statement. A citation also does not guarantee that the source supports the statement. See the source-tracing guide for a review method.
For example, suppose an agent fetched your pricing page on Monday. On Tuesday, a captured answer still quotes an old plan and cites a third-party article. The fetch establishes access to your page on Monday. The answer establishes what this particular buyer question returned on Tuesday. Neither observation proves that the fetch caused or should have prevented the old-plan claim.
Which number should you report?
Name the event and its source. Report verified agent requests as requests, cited answers as citations within a defined prompt set, and AI-sourced visits as visits under your analytics method. Keep the time window and denominator with each number. Do not add requests, citations, and visits into one “AI traffic” total.
In KnitKnot, Traffic → Agent activity shows requests from a connected Cloudflare zone. Traffic → AI referrals shows visits from a connected analytics source. Benchmarks preserve the answers and available citations for the buyer questions you run. Content → Access helps investigate a page that agents cannot fetch. Read those views together when the question spans access, representation, and visits.
